For the second year in the row, the Residence Life department of Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey, reached out to PDR Coach Carlo Profico of Budo Full Range Martial Arts in Voorhees, New Jersey, to conduct a self-defense seminar for the Rutgers University students.
This year’s class was filled primarily with women. At the start of the course, several of the participants were skeptical and reserved. Several students had not initially signed up for the course, but decided to participate after they took a look into the room to see what was going on. As the seminar went everyone got involved by asking questions and really working at the drill repitions. There was some nervous giggling but they all worked to make each rep count.
There were a couple of lightbulb moments. According to Carlo, three of the more significant were during the Bear Hug and Open Hand Straight Arm Drills, the demonstration of the difficulty in carrying someone while they are half-spearing your neck, and the biggest one which was during the wrap-up discussion. When the course touched on the topics of Indignation and the Be Your Own Bodyguard™ principle some huge lightbulbs went off…it could be seen in their faces.
Even Carlo’s girlfriend, who went along to take photos, said “people never think about themselves as being important…it feels like it’s conceited to think like that, but when the point was made about someone else that needs you and will miss you if you’re gone…well I never thought about it like that before…”
The end result was an awesome seminar and experience for both the students of Rutgers University and the instructor. Carlo was asked to return in the Spring to conduct a follow up course and is looking forward to the opportunity to help more of the students.
